WHAT IS THE STONE OF EBENEZER?
March 23, 2025
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.
Psalm 63:7-8 (NIV)
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
you who kill the prophets
and stone those sent to you,
how often I have longed
to gather your children together,
as a hen gathers
her chicks under her wings,
and you were not willing.
Matthew 22:37 (NIV)
Then Samuel took a stone
and set it up between Mizpah and Shen.
He named it Ebenezer, saying,
“Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
1 Samuel 7:12 (NIV)
I press on toward the goal to win the prize
for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:14 (NIV)
Our Father Who art in Heaven and in my heart, Hallowed be Thy Name, the God Whose Goodness is the Yoke that Keeps Me Under His Wings. O Lord, in Thy great mercy, You found me heaving with fear, and reeling from my confusion. Your goodness drew me, and Your bread and wine fed me. And now, in tribute to Your unfailing love, I set up a stone I call, “Ebenezer,” for You have helped me thus far, and I have so much confidence in Your covenant, that I am pressing on toward the Heavenly prize, for which You are calling me—Your Kingdom in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah!
Forgive me, Father, for any stones I have thrown with the intention to harm others. These stones are not just physical but verbal. These stones are not just propelled by my voice but also by my mind. The late President Jimmy Carter, once said that if he even thought about a woman other than his wife, he had sinned. Everyone laughed. And yet, President Carter had taken up his own stone of Ebenezer, which kept his certainty in Jesus Christ secure for his entire 100 years. Let me be certain, Father, that Jesus, the Fount of Every Blessing, is mine for now and the eternity lying before me. Hallelujah!
For those praying with me, have you been wounded by those you love or those you do not even know? “Heavenly Father, the wounds of human thought and expression are ever before us. We just can’t seem to keep our opinions to ourselves. We thank You for Jesus, Who reminds us, to listen to Him, even as trouble is ever before us and our faith is continually being challenged. Let us sing, O the joy of clinging to our Savior, the fount of every blessing, Whose goodness is like a fetter, drawing us into His longing and His joy.
Hallelujah!”
We pray this in the Name of Jesus Christ, the God Whose Goodness is the Yoke that Keeps Me Under His Wings. Amen and Amen.
